Pictorial Biography

This pictorical biography of Gerardo Abel Laguna-Sánchez, was writen as a part of the CLIL program at UVM- Toluca, where he has been professor.

This picture shows the 52-M class at IPN-CECyT "Wilfrido Massieu", WM, México City, in 1988 . Gerardo Laguna was member of that class. The next cartoon is a funny representation of the same picture.
If you look carefully, maybe you can recognize to Gerardo Laguna. The artist of this cartoon was the boy that looks like "Dracula" in the same cartoon (Marco Antonio Corona-López, aka "El Vampiro"). As a temporal reference, now is attached a copy of Wilfrido Massieu gazette in that time.

In this number of 1987 appears the principal, in that time, Eng. Victor Manuel Murillo Gálvez and the first computers for students in that school.
In the page 8 of that gazette, is showed the first places in the general grade score of the WM students. G. Laguna used to appear in that list. In this case the average grade achieved by him was 10 for the respective semester. In fact, since the final high average grade, G. Laguna won the "Federico Réul Gottschald" award:
In the next graph you can find a minimal Bibliography of Federico Réul Gottschald, a famous WM professor:

G. Laguna had his first computer curse in that time, and was with the IPN-16 computer, designed and produced in México by the IPN, at the CINTEC research center.

Additionally, G. Laguna used to participate in some institutional activities, for example as a member of the IPN "Consejo general Consultivo",

and as a member of the "Consejo Técnico Consultivo" of the WM school. In the next picture you can see some members of the Wilfrido Massieu Community, professors and students of the Consejo Técnico Consultivo in 1988.

In the next picture appear only the student members of the Consejo Técnico Consultivo in 1988.
In this picture you can see some of now prominent professionals, for example, at the left side appear Dr. Juan Carlos Chimal Eguia.

Finally, G. Laguna got a diploma, in 1988, as an electronic technician.

and the majority of their classmates were graduated too.

As an electronic technician, G. Laguna worked at the CINTEC research center, from 1988 to 1989. Basically, he was working in the process line of the Mexican personal computer called as IPN e16, designed by Dr. Miguel Lindig.

At CINTEC G. Laguna learned a lot, and knew some interesting people and researchers.

In this picture appears the CINTEC production team in 1989. Again, you can recognize some prominent Mexicans. At the right side, Eng. Ignacio Minjares T., Eng. Melendes and G. Laguna. At CINTEC, G. Laguna met to Dr. Ricardo Barrón Fernández, and since that time they have collaborated in many researching and professional activities.

In the picture appear G. Laguna and Dr. Ricardo Barrón at CINTEC Applied Mathematics Dep., in 1991.

After been working at CINTEC, and been studying as an undergraduated engineer at IPN-ESIME Zacatenco by one semester, G. Laguna decided to apply to the UAM Iztapalapa, in México City, where was accepted in 1989. In the following picture appear some of the G. Laguna class mates at the UAM-Iztapalapa.

The people of this picture, all of them, good friends and very interesting persons at the UAM-I, in 1993 . You can recognize some prominent Mexicans, e.g. Eng. Raul Miramontes.

In this picture, more of the G. Laguna class mates at UAM-I. You can recognize to "El Capitán Narváez" (Dr. M. Angel Narváez), Juan Miguel, Javier, "Bob", "Edito", Gerardo Arzate, "El Nerd" (G. Laguna) y Fabian.

In this picture you can see Ernesto Patraca Maldonado. It is very hard to recognize that he is not more with us. He was a smart and honest man. He was university classmate, college and good friend of G. Laguna and his recent die (2009 winter) was a hard shock for his friends. This picture is to memorialize him as the good man that he was.

And in this picture, you can see to "Bob", Cristobal, Efren, Mauricio, Claudia y G. Arzate. The G. Laguna Friends that appear in the last tree pictures were well known as the "Golondrinos" fraternity. At the UAM-I, G. Laguna met some of the smartest boys that he ever has known. He worked with some of them, as students and as professionals, and they achieved very interesting things.

In the picture appear G. Laguna, Carlos Badillo ("Charlie") and Andrés Ortiz. Really, it was a kind of "Dream Team", i.e. very successfully team. "Charlie" deserves a very special mention since their intelligence and human values, unfortunately he died when he still was very young in an accident while he was in a mountaineering walk at Iztazihuatl mountain. Every body that knew him feel this tragedy as a really big loss.

Finally, in this picture, you can recognize to G. Laguna, Dr. Victor Ramos Ramos and Diana Torres at the UAM-I CBI Laboratories, in 1993.

G. Laguna was under graduated as a Electronic Engineer in 1993 and began to work in a young Mexican Designing and developing Company: sedpc. He was hired by the sedpc manager: Eng. Enrique Cisneros S.

In that company, G. Laguna started a very productive and successfully age, designing and developing electronics devices for the control and automation of electrical utilities. In fact, he received a unfinished prototype of a device that later became the well known "Event Register REDSAD".

At sedpc, G. Laguna invited two smart boys (he met them at the university) to work with him: Carlos Badillo and Andrés Ortiz, and together became a reality the REDSAD commercial version. Thus, the "dream team" began their professional age whit a very interesting challenge that they faced and solved successfully.

In the image, you can see the developing and researching team in sedpc by 1994. You can recognize the Engineers Alejandro Barrios, Andrés Ortiz, Carlos Badillo, Mauricio Guerrero and Gerardo Laguna. REDSAD device became to be positioned in the Mexican industrial market
and that allowed to the company to be more and more recognized.

The business vision of the sedpc manager, Enrique Cisneros, and the technical competence of the designing team leathered by G. Laguna, allowed to the company to sell the products (hardware and software) in all México and some other countries.
One of the most important works done by sedpc abroad was in Dominican Republic, where sedpc worked in a join adventure scheme with one of the most important German company (SIEMENS). In the following picture is shown an electric sub station (SS), at Santo Domingo, that was automated with sedpc devices.

Thus, the company grew and was necessary to find new business premises and human resources. Again, in that process, G. Laguna met too much worthy people.

It is impossible to mention all the people that supported to the company with some work or ideas, but G. Laguna believes that many of their colleagues were very claver and very important to support the company growth. Specially, he remember to José Merino, Alejandro Barrios, Carlos Badillo, Andrés Ortiz, Eduardo Tapia, Alejandro Perales, Mauricio Olguín, Manuel Román, Antonio León and Israel Olguín.

The work in sedpc included both design and field activities. In the above picture you can see to Eng. Antonio R. León and G. Laguna configuring some sedpc products in a CFE S.S. at Metepec, Puebla.

By the way, G. Laguna was supported by the company to study a master grade at the UNAM-DEPFI. It was from 1996 to 1998 at C.U. in México City.

In the picture, some of the G. Laguna class mates of the UNAM-DEPFI. The picture was taken at the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores in 1997. The master grade was an enriching experience and was opportunity to continue the doctoral grade but, in that time (1998) , G. Laguna thought that he still had to do more things in the industrial and private sector.

G. Laguna remembers with gratitude to all his professors at the DEPFI-UNAM. He learned a lot with all of them. Specially, he was encouraged by Dr. Edgar Ortiz. In the above picture you can recognize some professors rounding to G. Laguna: Javier Suarez, Edgar Ortiz, Sergio Fuentes, Jonatan Torres and Arturo Fuentes. Finally, G. Laguna got the master grade (Operation Research) in 1998 with honors.

For G. Laguna, working at sedpc was a big opportunity to learn and grow as a professional. In fact this labor experience allow him to know a lot of countries in both America and oversea, since some business trips.

Finally, in 2010, G. Laguna received his Ph D. degree. In the following picture you can see the patient supervisors and Thesis jury after the dissertation: Dr. Alfonso Prieto (Thesis co-advisor) , Dr. Sergio Suárez (Reviewer and President), Dr. Ricardo Barrón (Thesis advisor), G. Laguna, Dr. José L. Oropeza (Reviewer), and Dr. Luis A. Villa (Reviewer). In this picture Dr. Oleksiy Progrebinyak (Reviewer) does not appear, but all they have been highly involved in the work leading to G. Laguna's thesis.

In the following picture you can see some prominent professors that were determinant, as teachers and colleges, in the G. Laguna career. From left to right: Dr. Ricardo Barrón F, Dr. Marco A. Ramírez S, Dr. Edgardo M. Felipe R, Dr. José L. Oropeza R, Dr. Sergio Suárez G, Dr. Jesús G. Figueroa N, Gerardo A. Laguna S, Dr. Abel Laguna T, Dr. Ricardo Marcelín, Dr. Victor Ramos R, and Dr. Alfonso Prieto G.
